Starters & Alternators

Starter and Alternator Repair in Rio Grande City, TX

Alternators and starters are what this shop was built around. We still run a test bench, which means we can tell you whether your unit is genuinely bad instead of selling you a replacement on a hunch.

Bench testing tells you the truth

A parts store counter test is done quickly with the unit at room temperature. An alternator that passes cold can still drop out once it heats up under load, and a starter that spins freely on a counter can still fail to crank a hot engine.

We load test on the bench, check output across the full RPM range, and inspect brushes, bearings, diodes and the regulator. If the unit is repairable we tell you. If it is not, you get a replacement that we test before and after installation.

Signs your alternator is going out

  • Battery light or a charging system warning on the dash
  • Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev
  • A whining or growling noise that changes with engine speed
  • Repeated dead batteries on a battery that tests fine
  • Electrical accessories acting strangely while driving

Signs your starter is failing

  • A single loud click when you turn the key, with lights still bright
  • Cranking that sounds slow or labored on a good battery
  • Grinding when the engine starts, which points at the drive gear
  • Starts fine cold, refuses to start after the engine is hot
  • Intermittent no-crank that comes and goes with no pattern

Starters & Alternators questions we get asked

Is it my battery, my starter, or my alternator?

A quick rule: if the lights are bright and you get one loud click, suspect the starter. If everything is dim or dead and a jump start fixes it, suspect the battery. If the vehicle starts on a jump but dies shortly after or the battery light is on, suspect the alternator. Testing all three together takes about an hour and removes the guesswork.

Can you rebuild my alternator instead of replacing it?

Sometimes. On many units the failure is a regulator, brush set, diode or bearing, and those are serviceable. On sealed or badly worn units a replacement is the better value. We tell you which case you are in after the unit is on the bench.

How long does an alternator replacement take?

On most cars and light trucks it is a same day job, often two to three hours. Some engines bury the alternator behind accessories or require dropping a bracket, which adds time. Heavy truck and 24-volt units vary more, so we quote those after we look at the vehicle.

Got a problem nobody else could figure out?

That is usually when people call us. Tell us what the vehicle is doing and we will tell you straight whether we can help.
